How Important are NCERT Books for Cracking NEET ?

Simple and easy to understand
Completing the syllabus of NCERT books is just like laying the foundation for a building. You cannot build anything on the ground unless there is a strong foundation underneath it. NCERT books are designed to help a student understand the concepts in a step by step manner. These books help understand the basic concepts, which is essential for a rock-solid preparation.

NCERT books are simple to understand and language is not a barrier. Most reference books are complicated and use advanced vocabulary. A beginner may not be able to understand the concepts from a reference book owing to these complexities.

Majority of the question paper is NCERT based
Analysis of previous years question papers by experts suggests that most questions can be solved if the candidate has completed the syllabus from NCERT books. It has been observed that most questions in the Biology section of the NEET question paper are NCERT based.

Concise and to-the-point
NCERT is the go-to-book for a quick revision. They are concise and represent everything systematically. NCERT books have informative tables and diagrams which help in retaining things for a longer duration. A candidate may take days to revise a thousand-page reference book, while the NCERT books can be completed in a day or two, thus saving time.

Cost-effective and availability
NCERT books are a lot cheaper when compared to a reference book. The cost of an NCERT book ranges between Rs 150 - Rs 500, whereas, a reference book can cost anywhere from Rs 500 – Rs 2000. Also, NCERT books are available nationwide and are easy to find.

Finally, Are NCERT Books Enough for Cracking NEET 2020 ?
The answer to this question is “no”. NCERT books are enough to qualify the examination but to get a good score/ rank one must refer to other books as well. Since both AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS have merged with NEET, NTA is expected to raise the bar for NEET this year. Both these examinations required extra effort and could not be cleared basis NCERT only.

Each one of the 15 lakh NEET aspirants has read NCERT books because it is the basic requirement to qualify the examination. Then how can you score enough marks to secure a position in the top 100? This is where reference books play a major role. Reference books and practice tests will give you an edge over the others.

It is important that one starts his/ her preparation with NCERT books and moves towards the reference books in the advanced stages of preparation. NEET preparation must be NCERT-focused and it must always be treated with utmost importance, but it is difficult to get great results if one relies solely on these books.
